When and who to choose a diplomatic ally? This is the most important step of a successful diplomacy. The best example of this step from the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is his decision of migration of early Muslims to Abyssinia. By 615 AD, when the persecution of Muslims at the hands of pagans reached to unbearable level, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) allowed Muslims to migrate to Abyssinia. Being Christian and believer of the same God, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) knew that Abyssinia ruler ‘Negus’ will provide refuge and safety to Muslim migrants. We know that later, the pagans of Makkah despite their close trade ties with Abyssinia could not persuade the king for the return of the migrants. The right choice and on time diplomatic step of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) helped Muslims not only to find a safe place but a true friend as well.

Upon migration to Medina in 622 AD, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) laid the foundation of first Muslims city state. The first challenge for the newly born state was its multi-religious structure. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) successfully overcomes the challenge by drafting the Charter of Medina that assured peace, prosperity and freedom of religion and security to all citizens of Medina. There were 52 articles (according to Doctor Tahir ul Qadri its number is 63) in Charter of Medina and it has beautifully discussed every aspect of society like from religious freedom to state security through collective efforts. This was one of the greatest diplomatic achievements of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) after migration.

The most important aspect of the treaty was peace agreement between Muslims and infidels of Makah for Ten successive years. This gave Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Muslims an opportunity to spread the message of Allah to the nearby states. The Holy Quran called Treaty of Hudiabiyah Fatah-e-Mubeen in these terms.

“Indeed, We have granted you a clear triumph ‘O Prophet’”. Surah Al Fatah

Though the treaty was dissolved by the infidels after an year or more but during this time Muslims had gained enough military and diplomatic strength and so in 630 AD they successfully conquered Makah.
