Chauri Chaura Incident

Muslims of India had launched Khilafat Movement in 1919, to halt the disintegration of Ottoman Empire and no harm to be done to the Khalifa. Gandhi in 1920 launched his Noncooperation Movement to force the war torn British Empire to come to his terms and get Sawaraj, self-rule. In order to get maximum result both Khilafat Movement and Noncooperation Movement were brought together. By 1922, majority of the Khilafat Movement leaders were in jail and Gandhi alone was leading both the Khilafat Movement and Noncooperation Movement.

As both the movements seemed fruitless, Gandhi intended to launch his Civil Disobedience Movement in early 1922. Under this movement all the Indians were asked not to pay government taxes and revenues.

On 4th February 1922, people of Chauri Chaura, a small town of Farakhabad district, demonstrated a procession and refused to pay government taxes. The police tried to disperse the procession which infuriated the people. The hostile mob set fire to the police station where twenty two policemen were burnt alive.

Causes of Chauri Chaura Incident

In order to compensate its war waging cost that incurred on British Government during World War I, the government levied heavy taxes on the people of India. This highly disappointed and infuriated the people who had already paid its cost during the War with their blood.

Chauri Chaura Incident

Another major cause of the Chauri Chaura incident was the detention of Indians on mere charges. The government had adopted Rowlatt Act 1919, which had imposed very strict rules on Indian people. An estimated 35,000 people were in jail by that time. All these misconducts had fed-up the people of India.

The government had arrested all prominent Muslim and Hindu leaders. The ultimate output of this step was, no prominent leader was present at the time of the incident that could stop the infuriated procession from taking this severe step.

The immediate effect of the Chauri Chaura incident was, it lead to the death of three civilians and twenty two policemen.

Another devastating impact of the Chauri Chaura incident was the untimely ending of both the Khilafat and Noncooperation Movement. Gandhi in frustration called the end of Noncooperation Movement which also brought an end to the Khilafat Movement.
